First 100% Green Energy in the Georgian Financial Sector
For the first time in the Georgian financial sector, 100% of energy consumption has been verified through the Guarantee of Origin (GO) system.
Energy company Adjaristsqali Georgia LLC, which owns and operates one of Georgia’s leading hydropower assets — the 187 MW Shuakhevi Hydropower Cascade — is actively engaged in renewable energy generation and in the development of the Guarantee of Origin certification system.
Guarantees of Origin (GOs) is an internationally recognized mechanism that certifies that electricity has been produced from renewable energy sources. This system enables companies to verify the sustainability of their energy consumption and contributes to greater transparency in the energy market.
In Georgia, the Guarantee of Origin system has been in place since 2023, in line with the EU Directive 2009/28/EC and based on the Law of Georgia on the Promotion of the Production and Use of Energy from Renewable Sources. The legislation was developed by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia and recognizes GOs as an important instrument for encouraging the use of renewable energy.
A key role in the development and operation of the system is played by the Georgian State Electrosystem, which ensures the issuance, registration, transfer, and cancellation of certificates in accordance with international standards and the methodology approved by the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission.
As a result of the partnership between Adjaristsqali Georgia and ProCredit Bank, ProCredit Bank has become the first financial institution in Georgia to obtain a Guarantee of Origin certificate, confirming that the electricity it consumes is fully sourced from renewables.
“This cooperation represents an important step both in the development of the energy sector and in strengthening transparency and sustainability. Our active involvement in the GO system enables companies to clearly and reliably verify the origin of their energy and contribute to the development of a green economy,” said Nino Dadunashvili, Commercial Director of Adjaristsqali Georgia LLC.
